Aston Villa are continuing to assess midfield reinforcements ahead of a crucial summer transfer window, with reports suggesting a move for Almeria midfielder Dion Lopy remains a genuine possibility.
The Villans are preparing for another demanding campaign after securing Champions League qualification and winning the Europa League under Unai Emery, making squad depth a major priority.
According to reports from Spain, Villa have already made an approach for the Senegal international but have yet to meet Almeria’s valuation.
Villa Bid Falls Short of Asking Price
Earlier reports claimed Aston Villa submitted an offer worth €17 million (£14.5m) for Lopy as they looked to strengthen their midfield options.
The 24-year-old has been on Villa’s radar for several years, having first been linked with a move to the club before leaving French side Reims to join Almeria in 2023.
Now, according to Spanish newspaper La Voz de Almeria, cited by Sport Witness, Aston Villa have renewed their interest but remain short of the fee required to complete a deal.
The report states that Almeria are holding firm in their demand for around €20 million (£17m), with the Spanish club unwilling to lower their valuation at this stage.
Despite that stance, a transfer this summer is still described as a “real possibility”, with both clubs potentially able to reach a compromise during negotiations.
Lopy Viewed as Strong Fit for Emery’s Midfield
The Senegal international is currently under contract until 2029, placing Almeria in a strong position when it comes to negotiating any potential sale.
However, Villa reportedly view Lopy as an ideal addition to Emery’s squad because of his blend of physicality, technical ability and competitive mentality.
The midfielder joined Almeria from Reims for a reported €6.5 million (£5.6m) and has steadily developed into one of the club’s most valuable assets.
His performances in Spain have continued to attract attention, with several clubs monitoring his progress in recent seasons.
Almeria Preparing for Potential Departure
There are also indications that Almeria may be preparing for the possibility of losing Lopy this summer.
Reports suggest the Spanish club have already identified Real Zaragoza midfielder Yussif Saidu as a potential replacement should the Senegalese international leave.
Villa are not the only club to have tracked the midfielder during his career.
Crystal Palace, Marseille and Salernitana were previously linked with Lopy before his move to Almeria, while Everton were also credited with interest last summer.
Busy Summer Ahead for Villa
The Premier League transfer window will officially open on June 15 and close on September 1, giving Aston Villa plenty of time to strengthen their squad.
For Emery and Villa’s recruitment team, the priority will be building a group capable of competing successfully both in the Premier League and Champions League next season.
Adding quality and depth in midfield remains a key objective, and Lopy appears to be one of the players firmly under consideration as Villa continue planning for another ambitious campaign.
