Aston Villa Could Make Oscar Mingueza Their First Summer Signing as Premier League Move Beckons

Aston Villa may still be celebrating their Europa League triumph, but attention is already turning towards the summer transfer window as Unai Emery looks to strengthen his squad ahead of another demanding campaign.

After securing a fourth-place finish in the Premier League and lifting the Europa League trophy in Istanbul with a convincing 3-0 victory over Freiburg, Villa are preparing for a return to Champions League football next season.

The club’s progress under Emery has been remarkable since his arrival in 2022, and the Spaniard is expected to push for further reinforcements as Aston Villa look to build on their recent success.

Last summer’s transfer activity was heavily influenced by Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and UEFA Squad Cost Rules (SCR), limiting Villa’s ability to make major additions.

However, Emery has indicated that he hopes the club will operate with greater flexibility this time around.

Speaking previously, the Villa manager acknowledged the challenges faced last season but stressed the importance of maintaining both ambition and balance as the club continues its development.

Mingueza Emerging as Key Target

One player who has emerged as a leading target is former Barcelona defender Oscar Mingueza.

The 27-year-old is expected to leave Celta Vigo this summer and could be available without a transfer fee, making him an attractive option for several clubs.

According to reports, Aston Villa have been monitoring the Spain international for some time as they continue searching for additional competition and depth in defensive areas.

Mingueza’s versatility is considered one of his biggest strengths.

Capable of playing at right-back, centre-back and across multiple defensive positions, he would offer Emery valuable flexibility throughout a season that includes both domestic and European commitments.

Villa Hold Important Advantage

Reports from The Telegraph suggest Villa’s interest in Mingueza is long-standing, particularly because of their desire to strengthen options around Matty Cash.

The defender’s ability to operate centrally may also prove useful given recent injury concerns and Emery’s tactical adjustments across the back line.

While Aston Villa are believed to face competition from clubs including Arsenal and Fulham, there are signs that Villa may hold a significant advantage.

According to Sky Sports, Mingueza is keen on a move to the Premier League, opening the door for English clubs to pursue a deal.

Unlike some of their rivals, however, Aston Villa can offer Champions League football as well as the opportunity to work under one of Europe’s most respected coaches.

Smart Business for Villa

For a club continuing to operate carefully within financial regulations, securing an experienced international defender on a free transfer would represent excellent business.

Mingueza brings top-level experience from both La Liga and European competition while still being in the prime years of his career.

His arrival would strengthen squad depth, increase competition for places and provide Emery with another tactically flexible option as Villa prepare for a season involving multiple competitions.

Given the financial value of the opportunity and the player’s suitability to Emery’s system, Mingueza could prove to be one of Aston Villa’s most sensible signings of the summer if a deal can be completed.
