Aston Villa Monitoring Former Barcelona Defender Oscar Mingueza Ahead of Summer Window

Aston Villa are already planning for another ambitious summer following their Europa League triumph, with Unai Emery reportedly targeting reinforcements as the club prepares for a return to Champions League football.

Villa’s success in Europe capped another impressive season under Emery and continued the club’s rapid progress since the Spaniard’s arrival at Villa Park.

With the demands of competing both domestically and in Europe next season, attention has now shifted towards strengthening the squad and adding greater depth across key positions.

Recent reports have suggested Villa are expected to prioritise defensive additions during the transfer window, particularly as financial regulations continue to influence recruitment decisions.

There has also been speculation surrounding the futures of several first-team players, including Morgan Rogers, who has attracted interest following another strong campaign.

As a result, Aston Villa are believed to be focusing on versatile and cost-effective signings rather than pursuing only high-profile arrivals.

Aston Villa Interested in Oscar Mingueza

According to Sky Sports journalist Patrick Rowe, Aston Villa are among the clubs monitoring former Barcelona defender Oscar Mingueza ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Spain international is expected to leave Celta Vigo and could become available without a significant transfer fee, making him an attractive option for clubs across Europe.

Reports suggest Mingueza is interested in moving to the Premier League, further increasing Villa’s chances of securing a deal.

Since leaving Barcelona in 2022, the 27-year-old has rebuilt his reputation in La Liga and established himself as one of Celta Vigo’s most dependable performers.

Versatility Appeals to Emery

One of Mingueza’s biggest strengths is his versatility.

The defender is capable of operating at right-back, centre-back and in wider positions when required, qualities that are likely to appeal strongly to Emery.

The Villa manager has consistently favoured players who can perform multiple roles within different tactical systems, particularly given the demands of balancing domestic and European competitions throughout a long season.

Mingueza’s experience at both club and international level could therefore make him a valuable addition to Villa’s squad without requiring a major financial commitment.

The defender progressed through Barcelona’s academy and made more than 60 senior appearances for the Catalan club before moving to Celta Vigo.

Although he was never considered a long-term cornerstone at Camp Nou, his technical ability and tactical understanding earned widespread praise during his development.

Smart Financial Option for Villa

Since joining Celta Vigo, Mingueza has continued to develop as a player and has become known for his consistency, composure in possession and ability to build attacks from the back.

From Aston Villa’s perspective, the financial aspect of any deal could be just as important as the footballing benefits.

Despite securing Champions League football and winning the Europa League, Villa are still expected to operate carefully within financial regulations, with squad cost controls remaining an important consideration.

Free transfers and lower-cost opportunities are likely to play a significant role in the club’s recruitment strategy, particularly if resources are also directed towards larger signings elsewhere in the squad.

Mingueza appears to fit that profile perfectly, offering top-level experience, positional flexibility and European pedigree without the need for a substantial transfer fee.

While no agreement has been reached and Villa are not alone in tracking his situation, the interest appears genuine, and the prospect of working under Emery while competing in the Champions League could prove an attractive opportunity for the Spanish defender.
