Price rises after €20m Aston Villa approach – Player now catching the eye

Aston Villa will have to pay closer to €30m if they want to land Geny Catamo from Sporting CP, after an initial €20m offer was turned down.

According to A Bola, Sporting have increased their asking price for the 25-year-old winger, who has been impressing across the board this season.

The report explains that Catamo’s strong performances have prompted the Portuguese club to rethink their stance on his future.

Sporting rethink stance

Catamo is currently among the standout performers in the squad and has become an important figure, attracting interest from multiple clubs.

While Sporting had previously been open to letting him go, they are now leaning towards keeping him. As a result, they’ve raised their valuation significantly.

Last summer, both Aston Villa and Fenerbahce showed interest in the winger, with offers around €20m, but those bids fell short. Now, any deal is expected to fall within the €20m–€30m range, with Sporting aiming for the upper end.

The club’s leadership have clearly shifted their position. After earlier indicating a willingness to sell, they now view Catamo as a crucial player for manager Rui Borges.

Contract update

With eight goals and four assists in 41 appearances—33 of those starts—Catamo has done enough to convince Sporting they may have undervalued him. The club have already extended his contract by an additional year, tying him down until 2029.

That move underlines their change in approach. The winger is no longer seen as expendable but as a key asset, and his price reflects that.

Whether Aston Villa are prepared to match the higher fee remains uncertain. They were willing to invest €20m before, but the increased demand could push them to consider other options—something Sporting may well be counting on.
