In January, Donyell Malen left Aston Villa to join AS Roma on an initial loan deal. Unai Emery has now discussed the transfer, which has been well received in Italy.
SportWitness recently reported in detail on the agreement, with the Italian side securing a conditional obligation to buy the Dutch forward.
Despite Roma not currently sitting in Champions League positions, it has become evident they will meet Aston Villa’s terms for Malen. The Friedkin ownership are convinced by his quality, with the striker scoring seven goals in 11 league matches.
He has also earned significant praise from Gian Piero Gasperini, whose system is known for being difficult to master. However, Malen has adapted quickly, helping resolve Roma’s issues in attack.
His parent club were in Italy on Thursday, facing Bologna in the Europa League quarter-final. They secured a 3-1 victory, with Ollie Watkins netting in stoppage time to provide a cushion ahead of a decisive second leg.
Reason behind transfer explained
Emery spoke to Sky Italia after the match. While the tie was discussed, he was also questioned about Malen and why he was allowed to leave Aston Villa.
The Spaniard said – via Corriere dello Sport: “Why didn’t I block Malen’s exit? The move to Roma was a good deal for us and for him. He wanted to play as a centre-forward, but he had limited opportunities because we’re doing well with Watkins.”
Emery also stated he has no regrets about the situation and is pleased to see Malen performing well.
“I would have preferred to keep him, but he asked to leave. The chance to join Roma came up and I’m happy for him, he’s a top player and I believe he can enjoy a great career at Roma.”
Aston Villa set for modest profit
Some Aston Villa supporters may still feel some regret over Malen’s January departure.
He was eager for regular minutes ahead of the World Cup, and his performances at Roma have helped him catch the attention of Ronald Koeman. It also strengthens his chances going into the tournament, where he’ll aim to make an impact.
Aston Villa paid around €26m to sign Malen from Borussia Dortmund. Roma’s obligation to buy is set at €25m, with an additional €2m already paid as a loan fee.
