Donyell Malen has made a strong impression at AS Roma since arriving on loan from Aston Villa, and the Dutch forward now looks set to secure a permanent move to the Italian club.
The 27-year-old has been among the most productive forwards in Europe’s top five leagues in 2026. Malen has scored seven goals in Serie A and added another in the Europa League, quickly becoming a key figure in Roma’s attack.
Although Roma have slipped out of the top four and currently sit sixth in the league table, Malen’s impact has been significant. He has offered a clear upgrade on Evan Ferguson and Artem Dovbyk, fitting seamlessly into Gian Piero Gasperini’s demanding tactical system.
Reports in Italy have highlighted the growing excitement around the forward, with Gasperini even comparing his qualities to those of former Italian great Gianluca Vialli.
Roma ownership already convinced
According to Corriere dello Sport, Roma are now virtually certain to complete a permanent deal for Malen. While the club’s obligation to buy was initially linked to European qualification, that condition is no longer expected to influence their decision.
The Friedkin ownership group have already approved the move, meaning Roma will proceed with the signing regardless of whether the team qualifies for European competition. Sporting director Ricky Massara is expected to finalise the paperwork soon.
Malen is now viewed internally as a central piece of the club’s plans for next season and beyond.
Under the terms of the deal, Aston Villa will receive €25 million for the transfer, in addition to the €2 million loan fee already paid by Roma.
A move that suits everyone
Roma are typically cautious about committing significant funds to transfers, so their willingness to complete this deal reflects just how impressed they have been with Malen’s performances.
For the player, the move has revived his momentum after struggling for consistent minutes at Aston Villa. With the World Cup approaching, his strong form in Italy could also strengthen his case with Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, also stand to benefit financially. The club originally signed Malen from Borussia Dortmund for around €26 million, meaning his sale could generate a small profit despite his limited impact in Birmingham.
