Aston Villa headed into the March international break in impressive fashion, overcoming LOSC Lille over two legs to reach the Europa League quarter-finals before comfortably beating West Ham United in the Premier League.
Unai Emery hasn’t enjoyed complete consistency since the strong run of form in the autumn, but there are signs that Villa have rediscovered momentum at a crucial stage of the campaign, with silverware still on the line and a top-four finish firmly within reach.
Captain John McGinn’s return from injury has proven vital, bringing energy and leadership back into the side, while Youri Tielemans is also nearing a comeback. Sitting fourth in the table and five points clear of Liverpool in fifth, Emery will be optimistic about securing Champions League qualification. Nevertheless, the club’s hierarchy are already planning ahead for the summer transfer window.
Aston Villa’s summer transfer plans
Villa are expected to strengthen in several areas, but the wide attacking positions appear to be a priority. A permanent deal for Jadon Sancho remains uncertain, with Borussia Dortmund interested in bringing the England international back once his Manchester United contract expires this summer.
Despite signing Tammy Abraham in January, Villa may also look to bolster their attacking output, particularly with Ollie Watkins experiencing a noticeable dip in form this season. The club are reportedly keen to add a new talisman and could revisit a familiar name.
According to Sports Boom, Aston Villa are interested in a summer move for Marcus Rashford if Barcelona decide against activating the £26m option in his loan agreement. The Spanish side were initially expected to pursue a permanent deal, but that now appears less likely. Sancho potentially returning to Dortmund could further open the door for Villa to make their move.
This situation could suit Emery, with the Midlands club said to be preparing an approach to bring the forward back to Villa Park.
Why Villa could target Rashford
Sancho has contributed in flashes this season but has struggled to deliver consistent output, registering just one goal and three assists in 31 appearances. Considering Villa are covering a significant portion of his wages, the return has been underwhelming.
Rashford, meanwhile, has shown glimpses of rediscovering his best form. He made a strong impression during his previous spell at Villa Park, scoring four goals and providing six assists in 31 appearances after joining in January.
Although the 28-year-old has had mixed form in La Liga, scoring four goals and missing several big chances, he has remained influential in European competition. Overall, he has produced ten goals and 13 assists in 39 appearances across all competitions for Barcelona this season.
His pace, directness, and ability to lead the line could offer Emery’s side another dimension in attack. When Villa are at their best, they play with fluency and intensity, and Rashford’s profile fits that approach. Pundit Roy Keane previously described him as “world-class,” highlighting the high ceiling he still possesses.
With Sancho yet to consistently justify a permanent move, and Rashford potentially available at a reasonable fee, Villa may see the England international as a clear upgrade. Barcelona could still change their stance, but as things stand, the opportunity to bring Rashford back to Villa Park appears increasingly realistic.
