Brian Madjo’s absence after £10m Aston Villa move explained

Brian Madjo is still waiting to make his debut for Aston Villa after completing a £10 million transfer earlier this year.

The 17-year-old forward signed for the Premier League side from FC Metz in January, but he has not yet appeared for either Villa’s senior team or their academy squads.

His absence is due to registration complications that have prevented the club from officially fielding him in matches.

FIFA is currently preventing Aston Villa from finalising Madjo’s registration. The situation is linked to the governing body’s Article 19 regulations, which restrict international transfers involving players under the age of 18.

Madjo will not celebrate his 18th birthday until January 2027, meaning the rule applies to his move.

Although the striker was born in England, the issue stems from the fact that he joined Villa from a club based abroad.

Transfers involving young players from overseas have become more complicated since the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union in 2020. English clubs no longer benefit from EU exemptions that previously allowed them to sign under-18 players from other European countries more easily.

Despite the delay, Madjo has been working with the squad at Bodymoor Heath and continues to settle into the first-team environment.

He has also recently represented England’s Under-17 side after previously making appearances for Luxembourg national football team at senior international level.
