Amadou Onana’s agent has revealed why the Belgian midfielder chose Aston Villa over Manchester United during the 2024 summer transfer window.
United were keen to sign the 24-year-old, who had earned praise for being “solid as a rock,” but Onana ultimately joined Villa for £50 million from Everton. According to his agent, the decision came down to loyalty — she had already given her word to Aston Villa before United made their approach.
Since arriving at Villa Park, Onana has thrived under Unai Emery, adding an attacking edge to his game. Standing at 6ft 5in, he has contributed six goals in 43 appearances, establishing himself as a dominant presence in midfield — the kind of player Manchester United could use right now.
Former boss Erik ten Hag had wanted Onana to strengthen his midfield, but instead ended up signing Manuel Ugarte, who has struggled for consistency since his arrival. Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim, now in charge, is eager to find a player in the same mould.
Despite United’s continued interest, Onana looks settled at Villa and is unlikely to leave anytime soon. The Red Devils have therefore turned their attention to other targets, including Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.
Casemiro’s resurgence has provided short-term stability in midfield, but with the Brazilian turning 34 in February, United are already planning for the future. Finding the right successor — one they missed out on in Onana — remains a top priority for Amorim and his recruitment team.
