Latest Premier League transfer rumours link Aston Villa, West Ham United and Manchester City.
Aston Villa are reportedly lining up an ambitious January move for a Manchester City midfielder, though they’ll have to fend off Premier League rivals West Ham United to secure the deal.
After recovering from a poor start to the campaign, Villa have shown signs of progress but still lack consistency and cutting edge in attack, highlighted by their midweek 2-1 defeat to Go Ahead Eagles. Despite financial constraints limiting their recent spending, the Midlands side could look to strengthen when the transfer window reopens.
West Ham, meanwhile, sit 19th in the table with just four points from nine matches and are desperate to turn things around. Midfield has been a persistent weakness, and manager David Moyes may push for reinforcements. Villa’s own injury issues in that area have also exposed their need for depth.
Villa and West Ham eye Kovacic move
Both clubs are reportedly weighing up offers for Manchester City’s Mateo Kovacic. The Croatian international, who joined from Chelsea for around £30 million in 2023, has managed just 37 minutes this season after returning from an Achilles injury.
Although Pep Guardiola is expected to ease him back into the squad, Kovacic faces fierce competition for a starting role—especially with Rodri nearing full fitness—which could prompt him to seek regular football elsewhere.
According to Caught Offside, the 31-year-old could leave the Etihad in January, with Villa and West Ham among several interested sides. The outlet notes: “Kovacic is no longer featuring regularly for City, and he could find more playing time at West Ham or Aston Villa. However, AC Milan are currently thought to be leading the race for his signature.”
Milan emerge as serious contenders
AC Milan’s interest could complicate matters, particularly with the chance for Kovacic to reunite with Luka Modric in Serie A. While Milan are reportedly ahead of the English clubs for now, a final decision is yet to be made ahead of the winter window.
With only 20 months left on Kovacic’s contract, City are said to be open to offers this January. No talks have been held over an extension, and alongside Milan, Villarreal and Real Betis are also monitoring the midfielder’s situation.
