Aston Villa are reportedly on the verge of agreeing a new contract with John McGinn despite strong summer interest from Premier League rivals Everton, West Ham, and Newcastle United.
Villa head into the next round of fixtures unbeaten in four league games, having found some rhythm before the international break. Unai Emery’s side sit 13th in the table and will be eager to climb further after their 2-1 win over Burnley, secured by a Donyell Malen brace.
McGinn nearing fresh Aston Villa contract
According to The Telegraph, Villa are ‘close’ to finalising a new deal for McGinn, whose current contract runs until June 2027. The Scotland international, 30, has attracted attention from several top-flight clubs after another solid start to the campaign.
Since joining from Hibernian in 2018, McGinn has become a key figure at Villa Park. The Glasgow-born midfielder has made 295 appearances in all competitions, scoring 33 goals, and has earned 80 caps for Scotland.
Before his move south, McGinn came through the academy at St Mirren before shining at Hibernian, where his form earned him a switch to Villa. He’s since been a vital part of their rise back to Premier League stability.
Major boost for Villa
Tying McGinn down would represent a significant piece of business for the Midlands club. His leadership, experience, and influence on and off the pitch continue to make him an indispensable member of Emery’s squad.
Losing him to a domestic rival in the summer would have been a major setback, but keeping him now signals Villa’s growing ambition.
Speaking recently, McGinn reflected on his journey:
“It’s gone quickly, but it shows how far the club has come. I still feel like I’m improving, even at 30. European nights at Villa Park are surreal, and I’m loving every minute of it. Maybe I’ll be here for a few more years — that’s up to the club.”
A new deal would ensure that McGinn remains central to Villa’s plans as they look to push higher up the Premier League table this season.
