Aston Villa tipped to land £17m ex-Chelsea star and UCL winner in bold January transfer forecast

Aston Villa may look to strengthen their squad in January after a run of frustrating results.

Their difficult start to the Premier League continued last weekend as they blew a one-goal advantage and were held by ten-man Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Matty Cash finally broke Villa’s long scoring drought after 67 minutes, but Emery’s men created little else, registering just one more effort on target before Wilson Isidor’s volley earned the newly promoted side a deserved equaliser.

Pressure is mounting on Unai Emery, though his track record as a proven winner buys him some time to steady the ship. Should he remain in charge for the winter window, reinforcements could be crucial. To explore possibilities, we turned to AI tool Grok, which predicted potential signings and possible departures at Villa Park.

England international linked with Villa switch
One name strongly linked is Ruben Loftus-Cheek of AC Milan. The 29-year-old midfielder, once hailed as a Chelsea prodigy, recently earned his first England recall in seven years under Thomas Tuchel. Known for his power, versatility and technical quality, he has played 73 times for Milan, scored 11 goals, and lifted the Supercoppa Italiana.

Loftus-Cheek is contracted until 2027, but Villa, Newcastle and West Ham are all monitoring his situation. Reports suggest a fee in the region of £17m might be enough to tempt Milan into a sale.

Villa are also expected to chase attacking reinforcements out wide. South Korea international Lee Kang-In is one standout option. The PSG winger produced seven goals and six assists in 49 appearances last season, also playing a key part in their Champions League triumph. The 24-year-old, famed for his speed, creativity and technical flair, could seek a move offering more game time, with a loan-to-buy deal being floated.

Possible exits: £80m man and long-serving defender
On the outgoing side, Grok suggests Morgan Rogers may attract serious interest, with Chelsea keen. While figures of €40-50m have been quoted, more realistic estimates put Villa’s valuation closer to £80m.

Another possible departure is defender Tyrone Mings, who has been with the club since 2019. However, given his importance this season, such a move looks improbable for now. Ross Barkley could also be sold to make way for Loftus-Cheek, while Emi Buendia — who spent the latter half of last season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen — might also head for the exit.
