Aston Villa remain interested in signing Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries ahead of the new season.
Unai Emery is keen to reinforce his squad after narrowly missing out on a Champions League spot in 2024/25. Strengthening the right-back position is a key priority, with Matty Cash no longer seen as the long-term solution.
Dumfries, 29, boasts top-level experience as a Serie A champion and two-time Champions League finalist, making him an attractive option on paper.
However, injury concerns may derail the deal. Dr Rajpal Brar, a physical therapy expert and sports scientist, has weighed in on Dumfries’ recent hamstring issues.
Hamstring concerns may halt Aston Villa’s move
Despite Villa’s interest, they could reconsider due to Dumfries’ fitness record. The Dutch defender missed 13 games last season — 12 from muscular issues and one from illness — raising flags about his durability.
If Villa do press ahead, they’ll likely need to meet his £21.6 million release clause, per Fabrizio Romano (21 July).
Speaking to Villa News, Dr Brar explained: “Villa may reassess his hamstring problems and consider the likelihood of recurrence, especially if fatigue symptoms point to the same area.
“They’ll also have to factor in his adjustment to Premier League intensity and life in England, which can impact injury recovery and performance.”
Villa should rethink Dumfries approach
Given his age and recent injuries, Dumfries may not be the right fit for Villa. At 29, and with inconsistent availability, he may struggle to deliver long-term value.
His salary demands and transfer fee also represent a gamble for a club aiming to build sustainably.
A more sensible option could be pursuing a younger, more reliable right-back who aligns with Emery’s long-term project and offers greater upside in the Premier League.
