Transfers: Aston Villa Join Leeds United in Pursuit of £30M-Rated Portuguese Midfield Talent

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has made it clear that signing a creative midfielder — particularly a number 10 — remains a top priority. Last summer, the club fell short in their efforts to land Gus Hamer, who eventually joined Sheffield United.

As a result, Brenden Aaronson was heavily relied upon during the campaign. While the American enjoyed his best season yet, doubts remain about his ability to consistently perform at Premier League level. This summer, Leeds appear determined to secure a more suited playmaker.

With a potential switch to a 4-3-3 formation, the new number 10 will likely operate deeper, closer to a number 8 role. Talks have focused on Emi Buendia and Gus Hamer. Speaking last week, journalist Graeme Bailey provided an update:

“Leeds remain interested in both Buendia and Hamer for the attacking midfield role. They’re waiting to see how things develop.

“With Buendia, Leeds aren’t happy with Villa’s current terms, but I expect that stance may shift soon.”

Leeds Show Firm Interest in Southampton Midfielder

Speculation around Mateus Fernandes has intensified. The 21-year-old reportedly wants to leave Southampton, and Leeds are one of the clubs closely monitoring his situation. According to Portuguese source A Bola, Aston Villa have now entered the race as well.

Fernandes is eager to return to Premier League football, and is currently training with Southampton during preseason.

Foreign Move Still on the Cards

Reports have also linked Fernandes with a move abroad, with both Atletico Madrid and Juventus keeping tabs on the Portuguese midfielder.

He’s valued at approximately £30 million, though interest from several clubs could drive the fee higher. Sporting Lisbon, his previous club, are due 10% of any sale, which could influence the final agreement.

A Smart Fit for Leeds

If signed, Fernandes could slot straight into Leeds’ starting XI. He brings a skill set no current Leeds midfielder offers — a natural attacking number 8 with the physicality to drive forward.

The young Portuguese international is strong in possession, creative in the final third, and capable of adding goals. If a deal can be struck at the right price, Leeds would be wise to make their move.
