Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has become a hot topic in the current transfer window.
French World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit has suggested Chelsea as a suitable destination for the Argentine shot-stopper, as speculation grows over his future.
Martinez, who received a red card in Villa’s final game of the season at Manchester United, extended his contract until 2029 just last year. Despite that, interest in him remains strong.
The 32-year-old, signed by Villa from Arsenal for £20 million in 2020, is attracting attention from the Saudi Pro League, while European clubs including Manchester United, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid are also reportedly monitoring him.
Petit, a former Arsenal, Chelsea, and Real Madrid midfielder, believes Martinez would be a valuable addition to the Blues, even though the club already has multiple goalkeepers in their squad.
“Emiliano Martinez would bring leadership and inspiration to the Chelsea locker room,” Petit told Escapist Magazine. “Though I’ve criticized some of his past actions, he has the mindset and experience to win. That’s what Chelsea needs—he’s a top-tier goalkeeper.”
He continued: “At 32, he’s still in his prime for a goalkeeper. He’d connect well with Enzo Maresca and the current players. My concern is more for Aston Villa—if they lose key players like Martinez, it could really hurt them next season.”
