Aston Villa are considering a high-profile move for Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson, as manager Unai Emery continues to strengthen his squad for another European campaign next season.
Following the recent departure of Jhon Duran to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, Villa find themselves short of depth up front, with Ollie Watkins the only senior striker with proven Premier League pedigree. The club had Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United in the latter half of last season but failed to secure a permanent deal due to the England international’s £350,000-a-week wage demands, despite having a £40m option to buy.
While Villa are reportedly eager to sign Marco Asensio permanently from Paris Saint-Germain, the need for another striker remains pressing as the club prepares for at least eight Europa League fixtures. According to Give Me Sport, Aston Villa have initiated discussions with Chelsea regarding Jackson’s potential availability.
Emery is keen to reunite with Jackson, having worked with him at Villarreal, where the Senegalese striker progressed from the B team to the first team under the Spanish coach. Jackson made nine senior appearances in the 2021/22 season and became a regular the following year, netting 12 goals in 26 games before his £32m move to Chelsea in 2023.
Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, Jackson has scored 30 goals and provided 12 assists in 79 matches, with 24 of those goals coming in the Premier League. He also played a key role in Chelsea’s Conference League campaign, notably scoring in a 4-1 final win over Real Betis.
Despite his impressive numbers, Jackson has split opinion among Chelsea fans due to inconsistent finishing. The 23-year-old still has eight years remaining on his contract, but new manager Enzo Maresca’s move to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town for £30m could increase competition for places.
Emery has continued monitoring Jackson’s development closely and is reportedly impressed by his performances. With Chelsea potentially eyeing another forward signing this summer, Villa may have an opening to secure Jackson in a deal that would provide valuable competition for Watkins.
Jackson fits the profile Emery is after—a quick, strong, hard-working attacker with versatility to operate centrally or out wide. His intelligent movement, goal-scoring instinct, and link-up play make him an ideal addition as Villa gear up for a demanding domestic and European campaign.
