The Explosive £60m Martinez–Garnacho Swap That Could Shake Up the Transfer Market

Aston Villa and Manchester United could spark chaos in the summer transfer window with a blockbuster £60 million swap deal that would stun the football world.

While the window is underway—despite a brief five-day pause—Villa are moving rapidly behind the scenes. Although no official arrivals or exits have been confirmed, there’s a flurry of activity at Villa Park as Unai Emery’s side work urgently to meet the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR), with a June 30 deadline looming to balance the books.

To comply with PSR, Villa are expected to make at least one major sale or several smaller ones. This echoes last summer, when several Premier League clubs engaged in creative swap deals to address similar PSR challenges. While not official swaps, these transactions effectively offset values—like Villa selling Tim Iroegbunam to Everton for £9m while signing Lewis Dobbin for £10m. Likewise, Nottingham Forest’s £35m move for Elliot Anderson was balanced by Odysseas Vlachodimos heading to Newcastle for £20m.

Most of those deals were primarily financial maneuvers with little on-pitch impact, save for Anderson’s promise. Yet they stayed within legal boundaries and helped clubs navigate tight restrictions.

So, what similar moves could we see this summer? One left-field option being floated is a daring swap between Villa and United: Emiliano Martinez for Alejandro Garnacho.

Although ambitious, the idea may not be as far-fetched as it sounds. United, who are overhauling their squad to return to European competition, are reportedly interested in Martinez—should they offload Andre Onana. Villa, meanwhile, are eyeing Garnacho as an alternative after Marcus Rashford’s loan ended without a permanent deal.

Even if United don’t move for Martinez, Villa seem ready to sell their World Cup-winning goalkeeper and bring in a younger replacement. Lille’s Lucas Chevalier and Nice’s Marcin Bulka are among the options being explored.

Garnacho’s future at Old Trafford is up in the air following a reported fallout with manager Ruben Amorim, and United are said to value him at £60m. Villa may see a path forward: sell Martinez for around £40m and use those funds—plus anticipated income from Leon Bailey’s possible sale to Saudi Arabia—to fund a Garnacho purchase. Additional departures, like Emiliano Buendia and Enzo Barrenechea, could help Villa satisfy PSR requirements.

Though some fans may feel Martinez is taking a step down by leaving for a Premier League rival, United could gain a reliable, world-class goalkeeper—while Villa receive one of Argentina’s most exciting young talents.

There are concerns around Garnacho’s temperament, especially after clashing with Amorim, but Unai Emery has shown he can manage fiery personalities. He transformed Jhon Duran into a top performer and profitable asset—Garnacho could follow a similar path under his guidance.

Still just 20, Garnacho remains raw but highly gifted. Despite United’s poor season, he netted six Premier League goals, with five more and eight assists across other competitions. He also earned the 2024 FIFA Puskas Award for his stunning overhead kick versus Everton and now has eight senior Argentina caps to his name.

Garnacho may not walk straight into Villa’s starting XI, especially with Jacob Ramsey excelling, but that competition could push him to flourish. He can also slot in as a central attacking midfielder when needed.

With one Argentine heading out and another coming in, a Garnacho–Martinez deal could electrify the transfer window—and possibly go viral in the process.
