Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez could be on his way out this summer in what may become the most expensive transfer for a goalkeeper in history.
Manager Unai Emery is keen to keep his top talents, particularly with Villa still in the hunt for a UEFA Champions League spot next season. However, the club’s ongoing financial issues might force them to cash in on a major player.
While others like Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers could also draw big offers, Martínez is expected to command a potentially record-breaking fee.
Manchester United move for Villa’s Martínez
Martínez has been heavily linked with a move away from Villa Park and appeared to bid farewell to fans after their 2-0 win over Tottenham on Friday, May 16.
Several elite clubs are tracking the World Cup-winning keeper, including Manchester United, who are said to have submitted a formal offer [Sébastien Vidal].
Former Aston Villa scout Bryan King told Villa News that any club wanting to land Martínez will have to pay a hefty sum.
“Martínez is still under contract at Villa,” King said.
“He’s a regular starter, one of the best in the Premier League—maybe even the best. That kind of quality doesn’t come cheap. If he moves, it will likely break the goalkeeper transfer record.”
Villa face tough task in finding a replacement
Losing Martínez would be a big blow for Aston Villa.
Since joining, the Argentine has developed into one of the world’s top keepers. With four years left on his contract, his price tag is understandably steep.
Villa have reportedly shown interest in Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher [The Sun] as a possible replacement. But if Martínez does leave, his successor will face huge expectations at Villa Park.
