Aston Villa ‘open talks’ with 109-goal striker available on free transfer

Aston Villa have reportedly entered discussions with free agent Jonathan David over a potential summer move to Villa Park as the forward prepares to leave Lille after five seasons in France.

The 25-year-old Canadian international is expected to attract significant interest across Europe, having built a strong reputation during his time at Lille. With 109 goals and 30 assists in 231 appearances for the Ligue 1 club, David is seen as one of the most sought-after players available on a free transfer—though a sizeable signing-on fee is expected.

David originally joined Lille in 2020 from Belgian side Gent, who brought him to Europe from Ottawa. Since then, he has helped Lille win both the French league title and the Champions Trophy, becoming a fan favourite in the process.

In a farewell video posted on Instagram, David said: “I wanted to personally tell you that after so many years, it’s time to say goodbye. These five seasons have been special. It wasn’t always easy, but I hope my goals and celebrations brought you joy—especially with our league win and the trophy.”

He added: “I know my start here was tough, but your support meant everything. You were behind me through the hardest times, and I’ll always carry that with me.”

According to French media, Aston Villa have made contact with David’s camp, joining a competitive race that includes Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Serie A clubs Juventus and Napoli. His next move is yet to be confirmed.
