Aston Villa may face a significant decision this summer as reports emerge linking star goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez with a potential move to Saudi Arabia.
Unai Emery’s squad could undergo notable changes ahead of the new season, with several key players facing uncertain futures. Among them is Martínez, who has reportedly attracted attention from clubs in the Saudi Pro League. Other Villa players such as Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers have also been the subject of transfer speculation, raising questions about the makeup of the squad heading into next season.
Saudi Clubs Eye Martínez
According to The Telegraph (1 May), sources within Saudi Arabia have confirmed that a move for Martínez is being explored. Villa are no strangers to negotiating high-profile exits to the region, having sanctioned the sales of Jhon Duran and Moussa Diaby to Middle Eastern clubs over the past year.
However, former Villa scout Bryan King believes a deal involving Martínez is far from straightforward. Speaking exclusively to Villa News, King stated that NSWE — the club’s owners — are unlikely to approve a sale, even if a bid as high as £100 million were submitted.
“Martínez still has four years left on his contract,” King said. “It would take an offer of at least £100 million to tempt Villa. He’s only 32, which is young for a goalkeeper. I had to retire at that age due to injury, but many play well into their late 30s.”
King added: “Even if a huge offer arrives, I believe Villa would consider it but ultimately turn it down. Martínez could think about a move to Saudi Arabia in a couple of years, not now.”
Holding on to Key Players Is Crucial
Aston Villa have made major strides under Unai Emery’s leadership, pushing for European qualification and reestablishing themselves as a force in English football. But that progress could be jeopardized if too many key players are allowed to leave in a single transfer window.
For Villa to maintain momentum, NSWE must resist the lure of big-money offers and ensure the club retains its core talent — especially figures as influential as Martínez.
