Lamare Bogarde’s Rise: From Academy Prospect to Aston Villa First-Team Standout

Lamare Bogarde’s journey in professional football has been one of determination, patience, and steady progress. The Dutch footballer, who initially developed his skills at Feyenoord’s academy, made a bold move to Aston Villa in September 2020 at just 16 years old. His talent and potential quickly became evident, leading to an early opportunity to make his senior debut. That moment came on January 8, 2021, when he played in an FA Cup third-round clash against Liverpool. His composure and performance on the big stage impressed many, prompting Aston Villa to offer him his first professional contract only days later.

As Bogarde continued to develop, he played a crucial role in Aston Villa’s youth success. One of his standout moments came in May 2021 when he was an instrumental figure in Villa’s U18 squad that triumphed in the FA Youth Cup final against Liverpool’s U18s. The victory, secured by a 2–1 scoreline, highlighted his ability to perform under pressure and signaled that he was a player to watch for the future.

Recognizing his potential, Aston Villa extended Bogarde’s contract in July 2022, ensuring his continued development within the club’s system. That summer, he was included in the first-team squad for their pre-season tour in Australia. This exposure to senior-level football was an essential step in his progression, but to gain more competitive experience, he needed regular first-team football.

In January 2023, Bogarde was loaned out to Bristol Rovers in England’s Football League. His first experience in professional league football came on February 4, 2023. Although it took time for him to adapt, his performances steadily improved, and he became a key player in the squad, primarily in a central midfield role. His consistency and work ethic earned praise from Bristol Rovers manager Joey Barton, reinforcing the belief that he was ready to make an impact at a higher level.

After his loan spell, Bogarde returned to Aston Villa in January 2024, eager to prove himself within the club’s first team. He participated in a pre-season friendly against Walsall in July 2024, and his strong performance there further convinced the coaching staff of his readiness. As a result, he signed a new contract and was officially promoted to the senior squad in August 2024.

His long-awaited Premier League debut came on August 31, 2024, when he was named in the starting lineup for Villa’s 2–1 victory over Leicester City. His composed and disciplined performance earned widespread praise, and he was even included in BBC Sport’s Team of the Week. Bogarde’s growth continued as he started in one of Aston Villa’s most historic matches— their first Champions League fixture in 41 years. He played a crucial role in a commanding 3–0 victory over Young Boys, showcasing his ability to compete on the European stage.

Throughout the 2024–25 season, Bogarde proved to be an invaluable asset to the squad. His versatility allowed him to feature in multiple positions, including center-back, right-back, and defensive midfield. This adaptability became especially important as the team dealt with injuries and suspensions, allowing him to solidify his place in the squad.

Bogarde’s rise from a promising academy talent to a first-team regular at Aston Villa is a testament to his hard work, resilience, and dedication. His journey is far from over, and with each game, he continues to establish himself as a key player for the club. If his development continues on this trajectory, he has the potential to become a long-term fixture in Aston Villa’s lineup and possibly even earn international recognition in the future.
