Aston Villa stormed into the Champions League quarter-finals with a dominant 6-1 aggregate win over Club Brugge.
Holding a 3-1 advantage from the first leg, Unai Emery’s side had a golden chance to progress, and they made no mistake on Wednesday night. Despite Brugge’s strong first-half performance with 10 men, Marco Asensio’s brace and Ian Maatsen’s goal sealed a convincing win.
Villa’s Clinical Performance
With a two-goal cushion, Villa allowed Brugge early possession. However, the game changed when Sabbe saw red for a foul on Rashford. Even so, Brugge remained competitive, but Emi Martinez—securing his fifth Champions League clean sheet—was rarely troubled.
Emery introduced Asensio and Leon Bailey at halftime, a decision that paid off immediately. Bailey’s clever pass set up Asensio, who smashed past Simon Mignolet in the 50th minute. Soon after, Maatsen turned in Morgan Rogers’ cross before Asensio completed his brace, finishing Rashford’s delivery.
Villa executed Emery’s strategy to perfection from the first leg to the final whistle. A defining moment came in the 84th minute when John McGinn relentlessly pressed Brugge’s midfield. Tielemans, his midfield partner, shouted encouragement: “John, John, win the ball!” Their tireless work in midfield—especially after Boubacar Kamara was subbed off—proved invaluable.
“We are raising our level,” Emery told Villa TV. “Competing in the Champions League was a fantastic opportunity, and we’re showing we belong here. Now, we prepare to face PSG in the quarter-finals, giving our fans two more nights of European football.”
Asensio’s Impact
The loan signing of Asensio has been a masterstroke by Emery, with Monchi and Damian Vidagany playing key roles in the deal. Initially, Asensio snubbed Villa in favor of Champions League football with PSG, but Emery’s persistence has paid off.
The Spanish playmaker has thrived at Villa, netting seven goals in just eight matches—matching his PSG tally in a fraction of the games. He even struck the post against Brugge but was at the heart of Villa’s attacking threat.
Since his debut in February, only Ousmane Dembélé (eight) has scored more across Europe’s top leagues. He also became just the fourth substitute to bag a brace for an English club in a Champions League knockout match—the first since Wijnaldum for Liverpool against Barcelona in 2019.
Villa’s quarter-final qualification brings in an additional £10.5m in prize money, more than covering Asensio’s loan deal.
Brugge boss Nicky Hayen praised the Spaniard: “His intelligent movement punished us. We failed to track him, and he made the difference.”
Rashford’s First Villa Goal is Coming
Rashford is still searching for his first goal in Villa colors, but his contributions are undeniable. He now has four assists in nine games under Emery—surpassing his tally at Man United this season, where it took him 24 matches to provide just three.
Against Brugge, he was heavily involved—creating three chances, completing 46 of 48 passes, making four successful dribbles, and winning all of his tackles.
Ex-Premier League defender Nedum Onuoha told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Rashford’s impact has been huge. His speed, dribbling, and final ball—like those assists for Asensio—have been superb. Signing both him and Asensio in January has proven a great investment.”
PSG Await in the Quarter-Finals
Villa’s fairytale debut Champions League season continues, making them the first team since Atalanta (2019/20) to reach the last eight in their first campaign.
Their next challenge? French giants PSG.
UEFA has confirmed that the first leg at Parc des Princes will be played on April 9 (8pm), with the return leg at Villa Park on April 15 (8pm). PSG captain Marquinhos will miss the first leg due to suspension, offering Villa a potential advantage.
Now, Villa set their sights on another historic European night.
