‘Season in Doubt’ – Aston Villa Loanee Suffers Major Injury

The anguish on his face said it all.

Lewis Dobbin’s loan spell at Norwich City may have come to an abrupt end after the Aston Villa winger suffered what appeared to be a serious calf injury in the Canaries’ 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

Dobbin lasted just 35 minutes before being substituted for eventual goalscorer Ante Crnac. Clearly in distress, the winger had to be comforted by teammates and manager Johannes Hoff Thorup before heading down the tunnel for medical attention.

“He felt it immediately while running,” Thorup said. “When a player reacts like that, it’s rarely a good sign. We’ll have to wait and assess, likely with a scan, but I’m not too optimistic.”

When asked if Dobbin’s season was over, Thorup remained cautious: “You never know. I won’t be overly pessimistic or optimistic—we have to wait. But obviously, it’s not great when you lose an attacker so early.”

The injury is a cruel blow for Dobbin, who had settled well at Norwich since arriving in January, netting twice in 11 appearances against Swansea City and Stoke City. The 22-year-old had started eight of those matches, becoming a key part of Thorup’s attacking setup.

His time at Carrow Road had been far more productive than his stint at West Bromwich Albion, where he failed to score in 18 games and played just 397 minutes before Villa recalled him. In contrast, Dobbin has already clocked 732 minutes for Norwich, a far more beneficial experience for his development. Now, all parties will anxiously await further news—but as Thorup admitted, the outlook isn’t promising.

Another Villa Loanee Faces Disappointment

Elsewhere, another Aston Villa loanee in the Championship has suffered disappointment—this time, not due to injury.

Kaine Kesler-Hayden was outstanding in Preston North End’s 3-0 FA Cup win over rivals Burnley, earning man-of-the-match honors. However, he won’t be able to play in the quarter-finals, as Preston have drawn Villa—his parent club. FA rules prohibit loanees from featuring against their own teams, meaning Kesler-Hayden must watch from the sidelines.

It’s an unfortunate setback for the right-back, but his overall season has been impressive. Operating both in defense and midfield, he has made 35 appearances, including 32 in the Championship. With Preston sitting 10 points outside the playoff spots but holding a game in hand, they will be hoping for a late surge up the table.
